Have you ever felt like you're running on empty? I've been there, too. The constant grind of work can be exhausting, both mentally and physically. In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to prioritize self-care and take a step back when needed.
Signs of Burnout
I remember when I got my first real design job. The excitement was almost tangible as I looked forward to getting to the shop everyday to work. I enjoyed talking with clients to help solve problems. Performing layout for business cards, flyers and even books never felt like work…until it did. The fun was slowly replaced by the routine of it all. I wasn’t as eager to face clients and thought my head would explode if I stared at Photoshop any longer.
That’s how my first experience of burnout felt and I was kind of confused. I was now bored, tired and looking at the clock more often. We all go through this at some point or another and I’ve come to realize that it’s ok. Burnout for me was the result of lacking the balance I needed in my life at the time.
Breaks Are Essential
I began to take breaks. Not necessarily physical ones but the type that allowed me to step away from design for a while. I often came home after work to hop back in Illustrator and do freelance gigs. Week after week I was putting in countless hours partly because I love to design but also because I felt the pressure and responsibility to serve the few clients I had outside of the office.
Without realizing it I had a heavy schedule that left me without balance. I slowly began to dial it back and introduce more time off for myself and my family. This meant taking less freelance gigs and really thinking twice about any personal projects I had on my list. Those took up a good chunk of time that I eventually reduced in exchange for a healthier schedule that I sorely needed.
Taking Care of Yourself
Now that I started to take breaks I really didn’t have a problem filling that time with other activities. I started to hoop more often and getting together with my friends. Those who play pick-up know how fun it can be not just playing but having great conversations on the sidelines. This is where I met many people that I still call friends today.
When I’m not hooping I’m outside working on my lawn. That has become another escape for me. It’s more than just cutting grass but learning how to maintain and care for a living thing. The smell of fresh cut grass and birds singing is just a relaxing experience. These moments allow me to slow down and appreciate all the little things while also keeping my mind active.
Keeping the Balance
Realizing what burnout was and how to tackle it was a life hack for me. It might sound simple but it hit like a ton of bricks. Thankfully I had realized it right away and found other things to keep me in a good place mentally. Now, I'm more mindful of my schedule. Even on weekends, you might find me taking a power nap. As an experienced designer, I encourage others to prioritize work-life balance. It's essential to prevent burnout and enjoy a fulfilling career.
That's a wrap for this week! Thanks for reading. If you've experienced burnout or have tips to share, please leave a comment below. Let's support each other on this journey towards a healthier work-life balance.
